AL WS DR2

Overview

The AL-WS-DR2 is a low voltage dual output LED driver wall switch. Two outputs each can drive 28 watts of LEDs with selectable currents - 300, 360, 660, 720 mA.  Each switch output is constant current regulated so all lights and fixtures should be wired in series and they can be dimmed from 100% to under 5% (V2 ) or 1% (V3).

Parts

Front Rocker switch

The switch has an On/Off rocker and a slider.  These control the on-board LED drivers and also sends DALI Group commands to other DALI devices on the bus.  See the manual for more information on DALI commands.  Because both DALI commands and 3-way switching is supported by this device - the rocket up/down position might not reflect the On/Off status of the attached LEDs.   The Rocket can be configured to control both ( default ) or just the Left side LED driver output.

Dimming slider and Output control

The AL-WS-DR2 has a slider for dimming.  The response time to the attached LEDs is fast, the response time to DALI bus attached devices is delayed by 30 ms or more.

The Output dim level and On/Off status is controlled by either the Rocker/Slider or by DALI commands.   If the AL-WS-DR2 is configured for a group, then DALI commands to that group will control the LEDs attached.    The Al-WS-DR2 will also respond to Broadcast commands and to short address commands to it's short address.

Power Input Terminals

For the input power, stranded 16/4 AWG or solid 18/2 wire is typically used to provide 48v power to the switch. Spring terminals are used for the connectors. To retract the spring, press the small button next to the hole and then you can insert the wire and let go of the button. Wire should be stripped about 1/4" before insertion.  There are two pairs of connectors - one to the home run, one to the next switch.

When inserting stranded wire, there should be no wire strands sticking out from the terminal.

If there are stray wires coming from the terminals there is a risk of a power shortage.

There are two input terminals on each switch so that multiple switches can be run on a single homerun from the panel. The limit of the number of switches on each homerun is dependent on the wattage the switches are powering. Due to low voltage code limits, a wire can have no more than 100 watts so the total wattage of the fixtures on a homerun must be less than 100 watts. This is 16 LEDs of 6 watts each for example.  The AL-STRUCT power distribution product has a 96 watt limit per output to keep within code.

Output Current to drive the LEDs - up to 8 LEDs with 6 watts each

The outputs are constant current regulated ( CCR ), the maximum output current should match the maximum current of the fixtures used.  The output of each output can be modified individually using small jumpers.  The base output current is 300mA with no jumpers connected. The jumpers can set the output current to 360mA, 660mA, or 720mA.

Output current on both channels is 300mA   Output current on both channels is 300mA if there are no jumpers

Output current on the left channel is 360mA, output on the right channel is 300mA.  Output current on the left channel is 360mA, output current on the right channel is 300mA.

Output current on the left channel is 660mA, output current on the right channel is 300mA   Output current on the left channel is 660mA, output current on the right channel is 300mA.

Output current on the left channel is 720mA, output current on the right channel is 300mA.   Output current on the left channel is 720mA, output current on the right channel is 300mA.

Earth Ground

The earth ground connection on the switch is tied directly to the faceplate of the switch. This green wire can be connected to the main panel earth ground via the 16/4 cable or other earth ground connection - this can be share by multiple switches.

DALI Connections

The AL-WS-DR2 is a DALI enabled device. This means that when connected to the DALI bus it can be individually addressed using DALI commands. To connect the switch to the bus there are two pairs of DALI connections on the switched marked DA. The brown CAT5 wire pair is typically used to connect the switch to DALI. To retract the sprint press down on the orange lever next to the terminal. Once the spring is retracted, insert 1/4" of stripped wire into the terminal. The order of the wires does not matter.   There are two DA pairs - one for the home run and one to the next switch.

N-WAY Connection

The AL-WS-DR2 switch can used in 3-way setups using this input.  Wiring examples are found in our 3-Way wiring document.  Besides 3-way , this input can be configured by programming for many other N-Way operation modes For example, pushbutton control, or separate left/right control, or FAN modes.  CAT5 wire is typically used to connect the N-Way physical switch.

Wattage Considerations

The low voltage wiring code limits maximum wattage on a wire to 100 watts. However, that does not mean that each switch needs its own homerun. There are two inputs for power and DALI so multiple switches can be daisy chained together. Simply add up the wattage of each fixture on a daisy chain and keep it under approximately 96 watts.

Installation

Rough In

For rough in the switch needs a housing, typically a gang box, Each gang box has a home run input, possibly via another gang box.

Leave 6-10 inches of each wire rolled up in the box for trim.

Trim wiring

Terminate all the CAT-5e cables at the central Panel with an RJ45 connector.

Visit each switch starting at the furthest from the power panel,  and wire the DALI connections using the Brown/Brown-White pair of the gray cable. Use the Brown/Brown-White pair and insert into either of the DA pairs.   Wire the switches using the red wire for power (+) and the black wire for ground (-). To connect multiple switches in a gang box together, use 4-5" sections of the 16 gauge wire.  Set the Rocker to off on each switch, slider to minimum.  Do not attach to the gang box yet.

If there are blue remote CAT-5e cables in the box - then these are connected using the Blue/Blue-White pairs, ( if not free, then use the Orange/Orange-White pairs).  Connect the Blue CAT-5e to the N-Way input of the switch.  Locate the remote 3-Way end of the blue Cat-5e and connect the Blue ( Orange) pair to the simple switch.

Follow the input 16.4 ( Cat-5e) line to the next switch and wire it.

If there a multiple switches in a gang box, break off the side prices of the face plate with a pair of pliers.

The metal plate of the switch should be connected to an earth ground.

After one entire run of a loop is completed, go to the the AL-Struct panel.  Insert the Rj45 for the switches you just wired.  Verify that DALI power is present ( V2 of the AL-Struct has DALI power status to show that there are no shorts) .  Test the 16/4 line for shorts, apply the current limited test power source ( AL-48z), if all is OK, insert the 16/4 pair into the AL-Struct.

Trim Test

Connect a AL-WS-010v switch in broadcast mode to the AL-Struct.   With this device, you can turn every light in the house on/off and dim.   Use this to verify operation of the lights, power and DALI.  After testing - attach the switches to the gang boxes.

Trim Tools

We recommend the DALI Detector device, the AL-48z current limited power tester, the AL-WS-010v DALI broadcaster, and a volt meter in case of shorts or other problems.  If the wiring is not clear - a tone tracer will be needed to locate the wires.    The only hardware tools needed for trim are wire strippers to strip the CAT5 lines, pliers to break of the faceplate sides, and a drill to drive in the 6-32 screws.   All wires should be stripped 1/4" before being terminated in the switch.
