Testing a String of Serially wired LEDs
Lets say, one of the strings of lights is not working right - how to trouble shoot that? This FAQ is for series wired LEDs. For Parallel wired LEDs, see Testing Parallel LV LEDs
Tools required:
A) OJ-606 short ( 3 pcs)
Installed Switches:
1) AL-WS-DR1, AL-WS-Bath, turn the switch on, set to minimum - this will supply about 20 mA for testing
2) AL-WS-DR2W, DR2C, DR2 with firmware 23 or later, enter Test mode. this will supply 7 mA for testing.
Entering Test Mode
a) break the circuit by disconnecting one LED in the string that is not working.
b) turn the switch off
c) wait 6 seconds
d) turn the switch on
e) wait 6 seconds - the switch output 7 mA on the LED output(s) with no complete circuit
Setting up the Test
a) lets say you have 4 LEDs in a string
b) we are only testing series wiring today
c) disconnect 3 LEDs, and bypass those 3
- bypassing tunable white - simply connect the male/female OJ-606 together
- bypassing fixed color - simply connect the OJ-606 short in place of the LED
d) leave just one connected
e) the loop now has just one active LED
Testing the LEDs
a) turn the LEDs off, wait 6 seconds, turn them back on
b) the string(s) being tested should pulse for the 'calibration' sequence
c) at the end of calibration - the one attached LED should be dimmable from off to full brightness.
If not, remove it,
turn the light off ( 6 seconds)
on ( 6 seconds) then off.
replace that one LED - mark it,
install a fresh LED and go back to step a)
if all LEDs fail - then there is a bad wire.
d) connect now 2 LEDs (then 3, then 4) until all LEDs are connected, goto step a) each time a LED is added
Testing the wiring ( Requires a voltmeter and a screw driver)
a) remove the switch from the wall.
b) use a lever nut to short the wires that go up to the LEDs in the ceiling
c) go to the first LED and measure the loop resistance - it should be less than 1 ohm. if greater than 1 ohm - find the break.
